The Cardwell Jimmerson Contemporary Art Gallery is hosting an art show which shines a light on a blind spot in art history. The west coast often times get placed behind the east coast in the art world hierarchies, and in this Los Angeles is seen as the driving cultural force.

The artist's located in San Diego found themselves within academia, and this allowed their practice to exist within gallery spaces and classrooms. This engine of artistic progress and processes has yet to be explored thoroughly, and hopefully this show can be a starting point.

Yet another photography exhibition I'd love to see. Being able to see Evans's personal collection of ~9,000 postcards along side his own experiments into the format would be quite the juxtaposition of artistic aims.

Evans strove for an unabashed realism (that could call into question the veracity of the scenes he captured: too staged to be considered real?) in his work. When placed alongside a postcard, we are struck with two different Americas.

It is odd that the MET refers to the picture postcard as representing "a powerful strain of indigenous American realism."

This photograph seems to be a far cry from the idea of realism: a verdant pastoral setting with the industrial reality a mere afterthought in the background, hardly imposing itself on the landscape. To call this American realism is perhaps a social critique on what one would stereotypically call the American attitude.

This is Evans's realism which contrasts sharply with the supposed realism of the American postcard. The postcard is a tool to sell an idea of a place, to try an encapsulate what we want a location to be. Evans images do try to sell us on place, but to a different end. His images are like Madonna's minus the child. They call to us to help them.

The work of Evans almost always posses that Barthesian punctum for me. I truly am wounded when my gaze fixes upon his work. They create a rupture point in which I pour myself out and the image enters me. This visual violence enacted in the distance between the image and myself opens up pathways into which I can explore the rays of light that are the photograph. The punctum is private, but Evans's work couldn't be any more public. The beauty of these tensions enhances the experience of his work.

The postcards are prime examples of Barthseian studium. We understand the images at once. They are uncomplicated and don't ask much, if anything, from our gaze. Any kind of punctum associated with these images would be less of a punctum, and more of an acute symptom of nostalgic reflection on Americana.

Evans turned the postcard on its head with his photojournalist style. I would really like to see the whole exhibition. 9,000 postcards is a lot and making my judgements based off of the handful on the MET's website is perhaps unfair, but I can only work with the visual information that MET chooses to display to those who are unable to make it to the exhibition.

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but you can only fit a fraction of that on a postcard.

I like Oliver Peoples line of women's glasses. It takes the ubiqitous wayfayer and ups the ante with small, but stylish touches. The other non-wayfarer frames are similiarly inspired and fresh.

The men's lines doesn't do it for me though. They seem to be comming from a different time than Zooey's. This doesn't feel like creative anachronism: it's disjointed. The stylistic touches on the men's line also feel uninspired when compared the their female counterparts.

New Found Glory has a live set from their Coming Home tour airing on HD TV. It was at the Avalon in Boston, and the first thing I noticed was Jordan wearing a Drive Like Jehu shirt. That made me pretty damn happy.

These guys may be the kings of pop punk (my personal opinion), but they have great taste in music. Reading Steve's blog (the url is a tribute to Texas is the Reason) is always a treat because you never know who he is going to post music or lyrics from: Copeland, Mineral, Boys Life, etc.

The more I listen to Not Without a Fight the more I cannot wait for their San Diego tour date.

Dashboard Confessional has released a new single for Valentine's Day: "Even Now (Acoustic)". It has the stripped down feel of The Shade of Poison Trees. Where Shade failed for me though, this track succeeds. It manages to capture something of the old Dashboard with his new styling and creates a moment that is perfectly intimate and poignant. The soft vocal harmonies and simple guitar complements his straight forward lyrics of longing and remembrance. The song is one of memory and finding something that was lost or never was.

Another solid Valentine's Day acoustic track is Jonah Matranga's cover of Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone." He released this via his website last year and does the track justice. The tape hiss, room resonance, and his voice creates a closeness to the performance that brings this song all together. I have always enjoyed Jonah's covers (especially Billy Bragg's "A New England").

Edward Steichen: In High Fashion

We have another fashion photography show. This time its in New York and features photographs from 1923-1937. From Gary Cooper to Greta Garbo, Edward Steichen captured the fashion of the time and made some of the most iconic portraits of early Hollywood's stars. He managed to cement in the public consciousness a new vision of the emerging American woman through Condé Nast's publications.

Steichen worked with Alfred Stieglitz early in his career, and Steiglitz's pictorialist influence can be felt throughout his work. With this background, Steichen amalgamates fashion and art photography in such an agile way that allows his photographs to feel fresh today.

Gizmodo is having a conniption fit about the similarities between Sony's latest Vaio commercial and the work of Improv Everywhere.

They both take place in Grand Central Station, and they both involve stationary people. This is where the similarities end though. Grand Central Station is an iconic locale, and the fact that Sony and Improv Everywhere use it for their work is not out of the ordinary.

The freezing subjects are handled differently: the Sony Models make a grand entrance as mannequins come to life, while Improv Everywhere actors operate in their usual matter-of-fact approach. Two videos taking place in the same location and having a similar concept doesn't imply any idea theft. At best, it suggests inspiration.

Why don't we throw criticism at Improve Everywhere for the basis of their operation being blatantly taken from Allan Kaprow's Happenings and the event scores of Fluxus?

I was intrigued though by the url at the end of the Vaio video: sony.com/golightly. I immediately thought this was a reference to Breakfast at Tiffany's, and this would have made sense with the video's fashion direction. Sony has tagged the latest Vaio with "Go lightly. The world's lightest, most stylish 8" notebook."

For me, The idea of "go lightly" brings up images of the repetitive myspace pages of young women with Audrey Hepburn's Holly Golightly plastered about. It makes me think: have these women seen the movie (or read Capote's book) and experienced Holly's character, or are they buying into the surface image of Holly with her apartment and parties? I admit I have 2 Breakfast at Tiffany's posters in my room (I don't know how I ended up with two). I enjoy the film for its technicolor bliss, George Peppard's impeccable fashion and the Jets to Brazil poster. I don't think of or equate myself to Peppard though.

Sony's Vaio commercial and tagline have done more social criticism than Improv Everywhere could have ever hoped to do with its (although funny and quirky) hollow displays. Sony, unwittingly or not, has painted its mannequin models with their mechanical movements and repetitive features as our generation's Holly Golightys. They are out there on the internet striving for style over substance and making themselves into just one of many new mannequins: fake, brittle and dressed by someone else.

It is better than Tip of the Iceberg, but not quite as solid as their last full length. On my first listen, I was let down. It felt and sounded like New Found Glory but lacked that initial punchiness. Second listen through, I was singing along and pretty pleased.

The single, "Listen to your Friends" is classic New Found Glory and delivered true on their promise for this album to be for fans of their self-titled. It is a pretty straight forward track though, but it doesn't detract from me loving it.

I am thrown off by the weak and ill placed "hardcore" gang backing vocals. "47" sticks out with this (and I found myself singing Coming Home's "Hold My Hand" during the verses here). The pacing, delivery and lyrics of "I called you 46 times" is just weak. The rest of the track stands out (minus the unnecessary break down at 1:43) as being as catchy as New Found Glory has ever been. This pattern works its way into other parts of the album.

I appreciate the fact that the guys are Gorilla Biscuit, Lifetime, Shelter, etc fans (and Chad's involvement in the hardcore scene). That's great, but New Found Glory isn't any of those bands. When they innovate and improve on the pop-punk they started in 1997 (as evident on Coming Home), they are dead on and make some of my favorite pop-punk. When they stray and try to incorporate the breakdowns and yells that have come to be the norm (popular) recently (thanks A Day To Remember, Four Years Strong, Set Your Goals, etc.), it doesn't work. Trying to be Lifetime was great when Saves the Day did it for Can't Slow Down and, to a lesser extent, Through Being Cool, but its time to innovate not replicate.

When New Found Glory is doing what New Found Glory has always done best, the album shines.

WoW vs Glider

"Blizzard notched another victory in its legal campaign against World of Warcraft bots when a judge on Wednesday ruled that a leading bot violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. MDY Industries LLC, the firm that develops and sells the Glider bot, already suffered a major setback last summer when the judge granted Blizzard summary judgment on several key issues. This week's decision deals with the issues the judge believed could not be decided until the conclusion of this month's trial. The judge ruled that Glider violated the DMCA's ban on "circumvention devices," and he also found that MDY's founder, Michael Donnelly, was personally liable for the actions of his firm."

I have been following the Glider bot case for quite some time now. I played WoW in the beta and have been playing off and on since then (canceled my most recent account last month).

This ruling troubles me, and I hope it gets overruled in appeals. The judge's ruling equates a private agreement EULA violations to copyright infringement, which I find ridiculous. Does EULA violation on the user's end allow Blizzard to ban an account? Yes, I wouldn't argue that. With the bulk of a MMOs information stored server side, I think Blizzard is well within their rights to ban anyone who violates the EULA.

To go after them for copyright infringement and sue them for all their assets is too far. It looks like we have a judge making rulings on technologies that move faster than he can think and comprehend.

On the SFMOMA's "Open Space" blog, there is an interesting post about the daily performance of John Cage's 4'33".

There is a polarizing effect to the author's writing. He makes a distinction between the fans of the piece and those unaware of its performance. The story of Swedish music professor's absolute zero theory of Cage's piece is an interesting anecdote, but it falls short in analysis and thought. I have always seen 4'33" as being about the inherent chaos of our daily lives and less about the supposed silence of the piece. Absolute zero, -273 C, 0 Kelvin, is a state of stasis. Those 273 seconds of the piece have nothing to do with stasis though: they are as chaotic and visceral as Stravinsky's Dances of the Young Girls movement from The Rites of Spring. To devolve those moments of Cage's piece to absolute zero is to understand absolutely zero about the piece.

The other story of the museum patron tapping the performer on the shoulder to ask for directions and getting chastised by the audience is the most interesting part of the blog piece. For me, it shows how unaware the an art audience can be about the pieces they look at and claim to understand and appreciate. It would seem as though this guest tapping on the shoulder would be the crescendo to the piece that will never appear in the score. That moment is beautiful, and the shock of it was the rupture point for the audience that they could not accept. That unknowing guest has done more for 4'33" than everyone standing around in some sort of oddly reverent silence.
